AYURVEDA

Ayurveda- the science of living - has its genesis in ancient Indian Philosophy. Ayurveda is a medical science that helps people to stay healthy focusing on what is required to lead a healthy, normal life.
It talks about not only the illness but also prescribes the ways to promote and preserve good health and vigor. It deals with body care, healthy foods and drinks. The mainstay of Ayurveda is to provide cures for ailments through natural products. Ayurveda has its origin in the Atharva Veda.
Ayurveda contains complete descriptions of various diseases, their etiology and recommends the correct diet and behavior regimen to fight those diseases. Sushruta Samhita and Charak Samhita are the two scriptures from which the Ayurveda is drawn It is based on TRIDOSHA THEORY of Vatha, Pitha and Kapha.. These three are the primary forces of the body which develops from Panchbhoota - PRITHVI (earth), AP(water), TEJA (fire), VAYU(air) and AKASH(ether).

Everything in the universe, including food and the bodies we possess, is derived from these bhootas. A fundamental harmony therefore exists between the macrocosm (the universe) and the microcosm (the individual). Vata are the factors responsible for the movement and sensation in a single cell/ whole body, Pitha factors are responsible for digestion, metabolism and energy, Kapha factors are responsible for strengthening the stomach and the joints, providing firmness to the limbs, and refreshing the sense organs.

Ayurveda upholds that there is a definite relationship between illness and the metaphysical state of an individual. The treatment under Ayurveda therefore focuses on the person rather than the disease.Ayurveda has eight branches or subdivisions to deal with various aspects of health:

KAYA CHIKITSA - general medicine.
SHALYA CHIKITSA - surgery.
BALA TANTRA - obstetrics, gynaecology and paediatrics.
BHUTA VIDYA - psychiatry. SHALAKYA TANTRA - ear, nose, throat, eye and mouth diseases. RASAYANA TANTRA - rejuvenation.
AGADA TANTRA - toxicology.
VAJIKARANA TANTRA - aphrodisiacs.
The emphasis in this section is to keep the body healthy through natural means by eating the right foods and fighting the diseases through natural processes, keeping the reliance on medicines as minimal as possible. The audience is also invited to make their contributions to the benefit of all.
